File system problem

Postby marcus.whybrow on Mon May 28, 2007 11:54 pm

Hi I have a music folder on PHRIXUS (my server name) file path:
\\Phrixus\Files\Music

but before making this folder i had the folder
\\Phrixus\Music

I cant remember if I deleted the content in the older music folder (\\Phrixus\Music) before aking the new folder (\\Phrixus\files\Music), but the situation is that the contents of each folder is a duplicate of the other, and upon deleting one of the folders the files are deleted in both instances.
Is this taking up double the space  or is it effectivly a shortcut.

Anyway I had to recover the files I had previously deleted (by accident by deleting one of the folders) using recuva (a file recovery program).

Well any help would be apprieciated, as I'm running low on disk space. :o
Thanks,

Those are UNC paths (shares basically), which are essentially network shortcuts to a physical location on the drive. If they are both sharing the same physical folder ie. E:\Files\Music, then it's not taking up double the space - just delete one of the shares.

If, however, they are sharing two different physical folders ie. E:\Music and E:\Files\Music, then yes, it is double the size as there are two locations.

Although, what you say about it being a mirror, it sounds very much like they are both sharing the same folder.

Hope this helps,

Rob

Right it seems that it was just sharing the same files, as upon further inspection it seems that all the folders in the "FILES" folder, are also shared at the root of PHRIXUS. But there is no harm done there.
Also after deleting the Ubuntu VM (Virtual Machine) with its virtual disk space of 8GB, I was able to free up around (obviously) 8GB of space.
Thanks :D
